Session 6 Tasks and Assignment

1. What is the difference between assessment and evaluation?
Assessment is the process to understand the state or condition of a thing. In the field of education, assessment focuses on a learning objective and outcomes. It provides information to for improving instruction and learning. Assessment is an interactive process between instructors and students that inform instructors if their teaching methods are effective. And how well their students are learning what they are teaching. The assessment information must be used by instructors to make changes in the learning environment and to improve their students’ learning and study habits.
Evaluation is the process of observing and measuring a thing for the purpose of judging it and of determining its value either by comparison to similar things, or to standards. In education, evaluation focuses on classroom components other than course content and mastery level such as discussion, cooperation, attendance, student behavior and verbal ability.

2. What are the challenges to assessment and evaluation in eLearning?
Assessment and evaluation in eLearning environment encounter some challenges. First, In online learning, where there is no face-to-face interaction, instructors are particularly challenged to convey their intentions accurately and provide appropriate feedback to help students achieve the targeted learning objectives (Gibbs & Simpson, 2004-2005). Second, if the instructors use online testing tools that available on LMS/CMS and free tools that available on the internet it is difficult to them to determine and ensure that the student taking the test is the student taking the course not someone else. Third, in online testing, students easily can use books or search the internet or other recourse. Instructors cannot prevent students from cheating using books, internet or other resource, students also can join together and cooperate to complete the test.

3. Explain the possible use of an online portfolio in eLearning.
First possible use of an online portfolio in e-learning is that instructor can use it as a method to evaluate student’s academic achievement and progress. Second, an important advantage of using portfolio in eLearning is the ability for student to receive a range of feedback from their instructors, classmate, friends or other quickly if they are developed any material. Third, students portfolio is a reflection of students continuous progress during their study. It shows their knowledge and experience that they have in their specialty. It is also specialist. Portfolio could be used as an archive of students’ work, research, and resource

4. Identify at least two ways to measure student participation in an online class and explain how you think these methods can factor into the students' grade in the course.
As Waterhouse explained in his book that, there are two ways to measure student’s participation in an online class. First, is to measure the quality and quantity of posting for each discussion. A second way to assess student participation in online class is to grade student on the time they spent on the course site. Many LMSs can track the number of time student enter the course site, measure the total time spent peer session. And record the amount of time spent in specific course site area. In my view, student participation in an online class must have only a little percentage of the final grade. I think that even in the classical face to face class students participation take a little percentage in the final grade. Moreover, student’s participation does not reflect the actual students’ performance. The quantity of posting does not reflect the amount of knowledge that student has. Student easily can cut and past form the internet or take previous student participations and use it in his course. I think that tracking the number of time student spent on the course site is useless because if I spent ten hours reading a book in the course topic it will not be accounted, while if  enter the course site and spent the time on video game it will be accounted.

5. Define peer evaluation and describe its advantages and disadvantages.
Peer evaluation is an evaluation which instructors ask students to evaluate each other’s work, paper, blog, posts and portfolio. It can be extremely helpful if the rules are clear and designed in the way to help student learn from each other. The main advantages of peer evaluation are: it encourages students to think critically. It insure student involvement in the learning process.in peer evaluation student have more time to provide a thoughtful feedback. Students can learn more from each other work and experience.  Finally, peer evaluation can reduce the time and work load of evaluation for instructors. The main disadvantages of peer evaluation are: the reliability and honesty of evaluation due to the influence of friendship. Students have no experience in evaluating each other.

6. Describe a possible group assignment for an online class and explain how to evaluate student performance in the group assignment.
Group assignment is a good way to get student interacting and collaborating in online environment. A number of students can work together on project that are too large for one student to complete. The hard task in group assignment for an online class is to ensure effective communication tools between group members. Group assignment can take many forms: Case study where a group of students is given a narrative description of a problematic situation and then asked to identify or solve the problem. Group projects where student teams work on projects, such as writing research papers, creating PowerPoint presentations to be posted to the class. Students as teachers where a group of students develops the presentation of a course topic for the rest of the class and poses one or more questions for class discussion. Student performance in a team assignment can be evaluated by instructor as a team and individually by asking team members evaluate each another participating in the work.

7. Create an online test.
I like to use proprofs online testing web tools. I created an online test for a chapter in a book talking about educational research.

8. Create a rubric or other grading aide for an online assignment.
I have created general rubrics to online assessment activities. 1 means poor,  2 means fair, 3 means excellent.
